David George: East of Eden
28 Feb - 17 Apr 2025 MMX Gallery is delighted to present East of Eden, a solo exhibition by David George.
David George has been exploring photographic representations of the contemporary British landscapes for forty years and has incorporated themes prevalent in nineteenth century painting practice and aesthetic, to aid this exploration. He has appropriated the sublime, melancholy, the romantic, the pastoral and the uncanny to create something that not only represents the contemporary landscape in a pictorial way, but also making work that can be still viewed as documenting the landscape. The exhibition will present a selection of colour night work and photogravures Read moreMMX Gallery at LAPADA 2024

Portraits of local traders and businesses, as part of ‘We are Lewisham’ – London Borough of Culture 2022 - Group Show24 Nov - 10 Dec 2022 MMX Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition: YOU are Deptford… So are WE! – photographic portraits featuring local traders and businesses, as part of ‘We are Lewisham’ – London Borough of Culture 2022.
The call-out has been looking for the projects to help increase footfall to the local high streets (post-pandemic times), as well as responding to main themes including; ‘environment awareness’, ‘diversity of the area’ as well as ‘protecting the place we love’.
As every space in London, also Deptford produced some famous creatives to the world and has its own history. What is like to live in Deptford now?
As one of the areas in South East London, Deptford has been ‘up and coming’ forever and seen quite a transformation.
Everyone has got their view, opinion and story to tell...
As a local independent gallery and the locals who live and work here, we are presenting many other fellow independent businesses and reminding where one can go and shop, eat, drink and relax.
Some old businesses that gave the high street a lot of character such as The Egg Shop and AJ Goddard pie and mash shop or one of all-time favourite Wellbeloved Butchers (nearly 200 years of history) at nearby Tanners Hill have sadly closed, there’s still plenty of south-east London charm alongside old and new shops, café, restaurants and boozers.
We couldn’t fit them all in this show so there is more to explore and be surprised by, but here are over 60 local places on the Deptford High Street and in close proximity of it to enjoy. So, go and support your local business, eat and shop locally and reduce your carbon footprint. Go and protect your vibrant community, meet new people and discover your favourite place you never knew existed.

Goodall's nocturnal series Twilight's Path has been described as being at once beautiful and terrifying. The images reference notions of the Sublime in Romanticism; the idea that a kind of thrill of delight can be gleaned from viewing something terrifying. His images are an attempt to capture the stillness, the sense of hushed, waiting presence that is palpably felt between the dark boughs. Read moreGeorge McLeod: Ignition

Alongside the luminogram prints, there is a short film exploring the concept and methodology behind the artist work.
The Luminograms are made from the most simple of procedures – directing light onto silver gelatin photo paper. 26 Feb - 9 Apr 2016 Karel Doing is an experimental filmmaker who has been making films since the late 1980s. His early work was informed by the historical practice and experimentation of Dada filmmaking and he has acknowledged reference to the handmade manipulation of the material surface of film by the postwar American avant-garde. In this solo exhibition at MMX Gallery a series of works are shown as the result of experiments with
film emulsion. Instead of using light to expose the film, a reactive process aided by salt, mud, plants
and yeast has been used to produce the images. Pre-conceptual patterns, colours and structures
emerge that are subsequently deciphered and edited by the artist in a search for a different
relationship with nature. Instead of domination and exploitation a more sensitive approach in
dialogue with the endlessly complex micro-world of plants and minerals is sought. Read more
