"My Dad was Horizontal Borer and worked in a factory all his life. Her retired in 1983 and was dead within eighteen months. All that machining, cast iron dust and factory life eventually killed him.

As my Dad was dying I was working in the USA. His last message to me was, "Tell him not to come back to see me die, his work is more important." When I returned to the Black Country, Dad was just a pile of earth in Lye Cemetery.
After his death, when I was still mourning, I started to photograph men with sliced white bread on their backs. The bread was so synthetic and seemed to lack any nourishment; to me it was the most poisonous thing at that time.
