"I sometimes like to give the impression of a captured moment - mimicking a flash from a camera - a burst of energy."- Michael G Jackson
MMX Gallery is delighted to present “Capturing the moment… Forms and Colours”, the latest body of work by Michael G Jackson. Following his unique Luminogram silver prints, the next chapter found its way to Limited Edition colour prints that originated from hand printed darkroom c-types. The upscaling of the work from a darkroom 9 x 7 inches print to a much larger size changed the result itself, and in the artist’s mind, it is as if the work has had the volume turned up to max.
Exploring new formats, techniques and ideas provides Michael with the foundations to all of his work. Since 2006 he had purposely avoided colour, and due to physical restrictions in his small darkroom, he was never tempted to explore what colour could give him. However, he eventually started experimenting with different chemicals and processes and to his surprise discovered that colour could expand his work immensely. He found that suddenly he had another factor to control - another limitless variation that he had to place into the equation.
Colour burst into his work and started taking over. He was already juggling with form, tone, texture, placement and relationships between forms - now he also had to decide, in the dark, what colour everything should be. This finally made him put the brakes on and start to consider colour as an equal to form.
The work became bolder, stronger and more direct. The colour palette that he uses is very much based on a mixture of more gentle and submissive blues, burnt umbers and raw sienna along with bold and exciting passages of vibrant oranges and reds. The base colour is applied with light and then controlled using different strengths and ages of chemicals that are selectively applied to the paper in the final stages.
The colours and forms on each print come directly from Jackson’s everyday interaction with the outside world - subconsciously or with specific intent. He often represents time as a repetition of a form within his work. This repetition sometimes shows the passing of a day, or the movement of an object.
With this exhibition, we are inviting you to take a journey through Michael G Jackson’s latest impressions of capturing a moment. A burst of energy with an abstract dance of colours, light and forms simultaneously creating a harmony through its geometric balance.
