Inspired by fine art movements; from Renaissance to Symbolism, Expressionism and Surrealism film and literature...
Growing up and working in the Industrial Midlands of England, this influenced Griffin to define his aesthetic and install real emotions and character to the people in front of his camera, setting scenes and forging his own imaginative and unique visual language.

"My Dad was Horizontal Borer and worked in a factory all his life. Her retired in 1983 and was dead within eighteen months. All that machining, cast iron dust and factory life eventually killed him.

After his death, when I was still mourning, I started to photograph men with sliced white bread on their backs. The bread was so synthetic and seemed to lack any nourishment; to me it was the most poisonous thing at that time.

My Dad had died through inhaling industrial pollutants (…)." - Brian Griffin, from 'The Black Kingdom. Photographs by Brian Griffin", 2013
